The MoonLodge Story

doula2_ML.png

I was raised in the least populated county east of the Mississippi river— on a farm in the backwoods of the Appalachian mountains.

I am the youngest of three sisters, and grew up with just our mom raising us.

Femininity and sisterhood was at the forefront of everything we did, and at a very young age I found myself gleaning from the woman wisdom around me.

Boobs, yonis and periods were all commonly discussed and compared for as long as I can remember. This upbringing created the beginning of my intuitive nature to support and deeply understand a woman’s process.

Growing up rurally, I was able to roam the forest alone for hours. With the freedom to explore our earth’s natural gifts, I cultivated a deep spiritual connection to the life cycles of all living things. By watching nature change over time— trees fall to let the mushrooms grow, dragonflies hatch and take flight for the first time, tadpoles grow into salamanders— I fell in love with the magical thresholds of birth and death.

I always felt that the land I explored was another mother to me. She was so strong, forever teaching me what it means to be human, and what it means to be part of my own continuous life cycle interacting with all the systems that we exist within.

These are my foundational roots.

From a young age it seemed clear to me that I was going to give everything I have to actively protect and repair our planet. I declared my seriousness in my late teens with my first and only tattoo, needled at the ball of my foot, stating simply,“tikkun olam,” Hebrew for Repairing the World. With my new reminder permanently on my body, I was ready to more fully enter the world and spin it towards the feminine, the way our Mother Earth has always intended it to be.

Although my service to help heal Mother Earth will always be A daily practice, the day Hazel was born shifted my focus in a more SPECIFIC area, and so began my journey as a birth worker and reproductive health advocate..

My sister’s birthing day was the first time I had ever witnessed a woman in labor, and it was my game changer.

My sister had decided to have a homebirth with a midwife. As I witnessed my sister work harder than anyone I had ever seen, I paid close attention to her midwife. She worked without disturbing her at all. She was respectful and grounded. She had my sister’s best interest in mind. She was the protector of this life threshold, and she was guarding the walls with her own life force.

I immediately felt so drawn to this energetic threshold of birth, and I knew instantly that I had found my calling. And so began my everlasting journey to become a midwife…

I have had the great honor and privilege to learn from incredible women healers and teachers over the years, and I am so grateful to have learned from their wisdom and experience. But truthfully, my greatest teachers have always been all the different women and babies I have supported as a birth worker.

At each birth I’ve attended,  I have continuously been reminded that it doesn’t matter how much science and theory I know, the art of midwifery is in the listening, the believing, and supporting the cultivation of a woman’s innate ability to trust and surrender to the many unknown journeys that lie ahead.

To master the art of midwifery takes time and patience, and I will continue to collect my skills and knowledge about women’s health and wellness for as long as it takes, like a continuous painting that could never be finished, taking in new forms and shapes.

MoonLodge is the newest work in my quest to master the art of midwifery.

I believe that there is not nearly enough education for women available to learn about our reproductive cycle. I want to change that.

I believe that our current reproductive health care system doesn’t support a healing approach that results in longevity. I want to change that too.

Your story is welcome here. I am here to listen, believe, and support you to access your innate abilities as a woman ready to find your power to change.

With Love,
Sara Brody
